Tears of Joy

My son came home in his second year of college and told me he wanted to join the army. I sat for a minute with this look of why. Then I asked why do you want to join the military? Rob told me he wanted to protect his country. Wow, I said, that is great but can you think of another way to protect your country besides joining the army. He answered no. My son has talked about being a soldier since he was 2 years old. Always playing soldiers with his brother. I thought as he got older his interest would change. It did for a while in the 9th grade he decided he was going to the NFL but after 3 years of playing football in high school, he realized that was not in his future. After 2 weeks of pondering over this I finally decided to let my son go to the Army recruiter’s office. I sat in the recruiter’s office watching all these young men and woman come in and out of the office. Some of these young people look like they were scared to death others had the look that my son had, I want to do this. I love the fact people want to fight for our country, however I just did not want it to be my son. Robert was old enough to make the decision on his own, however he did want my approval. He passed the exam and completed all his paperwork. I gave my approval. Then it was time for him to swear in. I realized at that moment my son had made a courageous decision. To protect and serve his country. The day my son left for basic training I cried tears of joy. Rob had made a decision I could never had done without being forced to. I watched him get in the car to leave, I reflected back on the day I gave birth to him. I made a promise to Rob that I would protect and give my life to save his if I had to. I wanted something different for my son. Being a parent, I wanted more for my son. I wanted him to finish college get a job in his field of study and start a family. Things went a little different from what I had planned. My son was gone for a total of 7 months. The first 3 months were hard for me not being able to talk to my son but a few times. The phones calls that I did receive were very short no more than five minutes. We were able to write letters so I did every week and he did as well. After 3 months in basic training, he graduated. The graduation was awesome I was so proud of my son. The next graduation was AIT training. I cried again tears of joy at the graduation I could see a change in my son. Rob is an army man now. My son came home a changed person. Rob is more responsible, dependable. What more could a mom ask for.
